Lean on me 03:52
Take your coat off and sit on down beside me You don’t have to be alone You don’t have to be you don’t have to think or act In any way that’s not your own And I can see it in the shadow of your eyes You’ve been up all night out in the rain And through the window I can see the early dawn Brings the restless day again And I would give so much to take it all away from you But I know that can’t be true But I can hold on to the fragments of your soul And you can lean on me In this room with me you’re safe – you can be certain All your wounds can start to heal I can hear you I can hold, I can comfort you And all that emptiness you feel I would give so much to take it all away from you But I know that can’t be true But I can hold on to the fragments of your soul And you can lean on me

about

This was my first attempt to record a solo album. It came at a great time of change for me - coming to terms with the loss of my parents, my children leaving home, and the opportunity to leave a job that had been wearing me down and set off on a few years of working for myself.

I wanted to record anything but a folk album, and was experimenting with various rock and other song settings and was still able to get my fingers round a Stratocaster fretboard before my fingers started to seize up!

The album photo is of Courtney's Bar in Killarney - taken on a walking holiday on County Kerry.

The themes of the album are dominated by the major life events i've described, but also include the 2002 World Cup, the view over LA from the outlook in Mulholland Drive, and the simple joy of running (I could still do that then!) over the Malvern Common at night after a hot day...

One of my enjoyable memories is playing a track to the colleagues in my management team - and, I think, then not realising I was singing about escaping from them just in the nick of time!!

All songs and music by Alan Courtney, who sang and played acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, and software drums bass and keyboards.

I played in rock n blues, then folk bands Malthouse Passage and Set em up Joe. I've recorded many albums showcased here
