Even the old folks never knew why they call it like they do
I was wondering since the age of two down on copperline
Copper head, copper beech copper kettles sitting side by each
Copper coil, cuppa georgia peach down on copperline
Half a mile down to morgan creek leaning heavy on the end of the week
Hercules and a hog-nosed snake down on copperline
We were down on copperline
One summer night on the copperline slip away past supper time
Wood smoke and moonshine down on copperline
One time I saw my daddy dance watched him moving like a man in a trance
He brought it back from the war in france down onto copperline
Branch water and tomato wine creosote and turpentine
Sour mash and new moon shined down on copperline
Down on copperline
First kiss ever I took like a page from a romance book
The sky opened and the earth shook down on copperline
Down on copperline
Took a fall from a windy height
I only knew how to hold on tight and pray for love enough to last all night
Down on copperline day breaks and the boys wakes up
And the dog barks and the birds sings and the sap rises and the angels sigh, yeah
I tried to go back, as if I could all spec house and plywood
Tore up and tore up good down on copperline
It doesnt come as a surprise to me it doesnt touch my memory
Man Im lifting up and rising free down on over copperline
Half a mile down to morgan creek I’m only living for the end of the week
Hercules and a hog-nosed snake down on copperline, yeah
Take me down on copperline
Oh, down on copperline
Take me down on copperline

Let us be lovers, we'll marry our fortunes together
I've got some real estate here in my bag
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner's pies
And we walked off to look for America
Cathy, I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
Michigan seems like a dream to me now
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America
Laughing on the bus, playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said, be careful, his bowtie is really a camera
Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat
We smoked the last one an hour ago
So I looked at the scenery
She read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field
Cathy, I'm lost, I said though I knew she was sleeping
And I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America
All come to look for America
All come to look for America

I've seen the bright lights of Memphis and the Commodore Hotel
E A
And, underneath a street lamp I met a Southern Belle
D A E
Well, she took me to the river where she cast her spell
E A
And, in that southern moonlight she sang the song so well
D A E
If you'll be my Dixie Chicken, I'll be your Tennessee Lamb
E
And we can walk together down in Dixieland
A D A
Down in Dixieland
Well, we made all the hot spots - my money flowed like wine
And then that lowdown southern whiskey began to fog my mind
And I don't remember church bells or the money I put down
On the white picket fence and boardwalk of the house at the edge of town
Oh, but boy do I remember the strain of her refrain
And the nights we spent together, and the way she called my name
If you'll be my Dixie Chicken, I'll be your Tennessee Lamb
And we can walk together down in Dixieland
Down in Dixieland
Well, it's been a year since she ran away - guess that guitar player sure could play
She always liked to sing along - she's always handy with a song
Then one night in the lobby of the Commodore Hotel
I chanced to meet a bartender who said he knew her well
And as he handed me a drink he began to hum a song
And all the boys there at the bar began to sing along
If you'll be my Dixie Chicken, I'll be your Tennessee Lamb
And we can walk together down in Dixieland
Down in Dixieland

What's your hurry? Just watch this.
This is one you mustn't miss;
Annie's going to sing her song Called, "Take me back again."
A drink for me, A drink for you. You're going to need a drink or two;
Annie's going to sing her song called, "Take me back again."
You never heard it sung before? I hear it twice a month or more;
Complete with tears and sheepish grins, It only lacks the violins.
The tune goes flat from time to time, The lyric sometimes fails to rhyme,
But Annie's going to sing her song Called, "Take me back again."
La la la la, la la la. La la la la, la la la.
Annie's going to sing her song Called, "Take me back again."
It sometimes lasts the whole night long, Depends on how long she's been gone;
I sit and look as hard as nails, She knows the damn thing never fails.
Take the bottle, fill your cup, Don't miss the part where I fold up.
Annie's going to sing her song Called, "Take me back again."
It isn't Annie's only tune, The other I'll be hearing soon.
Next week, tomorrow, or today, She sings it when she goes away.
Take the bottle, fill your cup, Don't miss the part where I fold up.
Annie's going to sing her song Called, "Take me back again."
Come on Annie, sing your song Called, "Take me back again.

Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
Ev'rybody knows
That Baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls.
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.
Queen Mary, she's my friend
Yes, I believe I'll go see her again
Nobody has to guess
That Baby can't be blessed
Till she sees finally that she's like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls.
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.
It was raining from the first
And I was dying there of thirst
So I came in here
And your long-time curse hurts
But what's worse
Is this pain in here
I can't stay in here
Ain't it clear thatÑ
I just can't fit
Yes, I believe it's time for us to quit
When we meet again
Introduced as friends
Please don't let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world.
Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do
You make love just like a woman, yes, you do
Then you ache just like a woman
But you break just like a little girl.
