St Alberts Night
04:28
|
|||
Pull out the cork from the bottle my friend,
Take your coat off and sit on down beside me
We’ll be around here till morning – there’s no hurry
We can play all night and we can sing in harmony
We’ll leave all our cares and our troubles behind
We’re here for the music again
Ch. So pull up a chair – you can sit anywhere
And we’ll play well until morning light
Though this doesn’t happen too often these days
We’ll still get together when we find a way
And we’ll play and we’ll sing just like in the old days
And we’ll toast St. Albert tonight
2. The landlord’s a madman – he’s locked us all in
Although we have surely committed no sin
Resistance is useless – don’t put up a fight
For he has condemned us to stay here all night
And we’ll get more beer if we play our cards right
And then we can play once again
3. It must be your turn now to buy the next round
It’s hours since you bought your last one
Our eyes they are red and our fingers are sore
The sun it is risen it’s daytime one more
But we’ll sing once last song and a chorus before
It’s off to the grindstone again

Tired
03:28
|
|||
1. Tired of these days in the shadows
Tired of these hard rolling days
Tired of these strangers and tired of my load
Tomorrow I’m fixing to go
CH. Turning our backs on the city
That takes more from us than we owe
Turning our backs – leave this hard life behind
We’ll head for a life on the road
2. Nothing to show for my labour
Nothing is left here to gain
Nothing to work for but hardship and pain
That stings like the cold driving rain
3. We’ll head further on from the city
And hold up our heads to the sun
And breathe in the pure air that’s all here for free
Our journey has only begun
|

Past the point of return
05:27
|
|||
1. Out from the harbour our tall ship is leaving
Lights all around us from streets that are crowding
Down to the water’s edge
Slowly receding small boats and trawlers
Tied up and floating now as the turning
Tideway slips past as we go
Ch. Lighthouses reach out far over the sea
Patterns and stripes spread afar
Drifting out slowly to start a new life
The moon and the bright sailors’ stars
Are watching over me, are watching over me
2. Am I too hasty, am I too slow
Why should I stay when there’s nothing I know
To stop me from sailing away
And slowly slip off all my shackles and ties
And all those deceits, all those secrets and lies
All washed away in the spray
Ch. Lighthouses reach out far over the sea
Patterns and stripes spread afar
Drifting out slowly to start a new life
The moon and the bright sailors’ stars
Are watching over me, are watching over me
3. Light of the future far in the distance
Beckons me over the ocean as slowly
We rise and we fall in the swell
Bringing me hope of an end to this sorrow
Bearing me further away every hour
Way past the point of return
Ch. Lighthouses reach out far over the sea
Patterns and stripes spread afar
Drifting out slowly to start a new life
The moon and the bright sailors’ stars
Are watching over me, are watching over me

Cranes
04:20
|
|||
Dm
Beneath a perfect clear blue sky
Bflat
In endless rows the young men lie
C
By the perfect symmetry of chance
Am Dm
Their crosses all say ‘Mort pour France’.
Gm
Together for three hundred days
Dm
They marched along la voie sacree
C
In ceaseless columns one by one
Dm Dm/C
To death and pain from foreign guns
Gm etc.
And here, divided by their faith
The Moslem graves to Mecca face
Their stones at half a shoulder turn
The rows of Christian crosses spurn
Gm etc.
Although they died on the same side
Reflecting all their faiths’ divide
In different facing rows they lie
Beneath their common maker’s eye
Bflat
Up in a perfect clear blue sky
F
The cranes forever eastward fly
C
Like great grey crosses row on row
Dm Dm/C
Towards the distant winter snow
Bflat etc.
Their cries of life still fill the air
Above the quiet hillsides bare
Where trench and shell holes scar the land
They fly serene in endless bands
Bflat etc.
In perfect symmetry of life
Knowing nothing of our strife
Onward each and every year
While young men are still lying here
Dm etc.
Beneath a perfect clear blue sky
In endless rows the young men lie
By the perfect symmetry of chance
Their crosses all say ‘Mort pour France’.
Dm section repeated until out.

Crossroads
03:44
|
|||
1. By their houses in this valley
People stand within the shade
Locked within the passages of time
Waiting for the caravan to come in from the desert
Laden with the burden of their trade
And far above the jagged mountains
Capped with snow march on forever
Towards a far horizon where they know they’ll never go
Whilst the scouring hand of time
It never seems to touch these people
Locked here in this valley far below
2. We are standing at this crossroads
Where the sky goes on forever
Where the roaring river races on and on
And the sand blows from the desert into devils all around
And makes us hide our faces in our hands
While far above those jagged mountains
Capped with snow march on forever
Towards a far horizon where we will one day go
Within our ceaseless journey
There is always one more mountain
Always one more pass for us to climb
3. Where to go and where to follow
As we set out for tomorrow
As we pass like lonely pilgrims through this land
Where to shuffle in the shadows in the shade of passing time
Where to travel on or where to make a stand?
One day we’ll cross a final pass and we will rest again
Where the almond blossom glistens in the sun
And where we know that we can sit
And we can watch the world go by
And know at last our journey it is done

Dreams
05:38
|
|||
D G
Dreaming just plays tricks on you; dreams can slip your mind
G D A
Incomplete and bittersweet, they steal away your time
D G
Like the hole that opens up, between the 9 and 10
D Bm A D
Dreams they all just slip away, and won’t come back again
G D G A
But every dream you ever had, and every wish beside
G D Em Bm
You can find they’re all still there
A D
If you open up your mind
Some dreams are cold and rough to touch, cut your fingertips
Bring bitterness into your wine, that puckers on your lips
With smell and taste of forest floors of soap and turpentine
But some have scent of summer sun that lingers in your mind
Dreams play loose and hard to get, sneer and scoff and scare
Dreams can open up your fears and make them hard to bear
But just when you running from the shadows and the pain
Some dreams send you hope and joy that always will remain
But every dream you ever had, and every wish beside
You can find they’re all still there
If you open up your mind
Put your hands over your eyes, fingers in your ears
Slowly start to count to ten – you can face your fears
When you get to just past 9, take your hands away
Open up your eyes and see your dreams come true today
But every dream you ever had, and every wish beside
You can find they’re can come true
If you open up your mind
Yes you can find they’re can come true
If you open up your mind

Solid Ground
03:44
|
|||
1. Like ghosts I watch the sailboats slip out in the swelling tide
Like children's paper shapes they catch the breeze and start to ride
Out past the cliffs and ever on toward the rising sun
Ever on, I travel on, as I try to find my home
And who’ll be there to keep me on dry land?
Who’ll be there to lend a helping hand?
Who is there to save me if I drown?
2. The sullen clouds that brought the rain that lashed me on my face
Are breaking now – through clearer skies out on the tidal race
I watch a single shaft of sunlight dancing on the waves
Ever on, I travel on, as I try to find my home
And who’ll be there to be my guiding light?
And stop me falling into endless night?
Who’ll be there to ease my aching head?
La la la
3. The sun is set, the birdsong ended – sky’s a deeper blue
The coil of wood smoke’s rising as the last log’s burning through
The warmth of day is gone and here the night’s a darker hue
Ever on, I’ve travelled on, to this place that I’ll call my home
Though there’s no-one here to share what I have found
There’s shelter here to cover me, there’s comfort to be found
And here I’ll build my house on solid ground

Looking for a Rainbow
05:31
|
|||
1. On the lost lonely highway, my hope in my hand
D C D
Slipping slowly from me here as I stand
G C
My eyes on the horizon, the mountains and the sea
D C D
Looking for a rainbow in a land forever dry
Em Bm
Looking to the distance I’m forever onward bound
C Am C Am
I’m drowning not waving, floating not sailing,
C D
I’m lost here not found
G C
Ch. And I’m looking for a doorway or a pathway through the sky
Am D C D C D
And I can’t get home no matter how I try
G C
2. And wherever that I came from and wherever I am bound
D C D
Distant lonely questions that rattle in my mind
G C
Sometimes it seems that the weight of these days
D C D
Bears so heavy on my shoulders that it’s too hard to face the day
Em Bm
And sometimes your face can hardly form in my mind
C Am C Am
And whenever I can’t see you and whenever you’re not there
C D D7
Then I am truly blind
G C
Ch. And I’m looking for a doorway or a pathway through the sky
Am D C D C D
And I can’t get home no matter how I try
G C
But out here on the highway you can start to understand
D C D
You can’t search for the sunrise when its right there in your hand
G C
All the hoping all the dreaming that runs through your head
D C D
Cannot build for you a shelter, cannot make for you a bed
Em Bm
And out here in this desert, where the highways all do meet
C Am C Am
You can find that the answer to all of these yearnings
C D
Is right here at your feet
G C
And I’ve found me a rainbow; I’ve a hole through the sky
Am D C D
And I’m no longer running, I no longer have to try
G C
Yes I’ve found me a rainbow, I’ve a hole in the sky
Am D
And I’m no longer running
C……………………………………….G
Cos I’m already there………

Milennium
04:23
|
|||
As leaf fall comes at season’s turn
With hardened briar and browning fern
And piles of leaves still crisp and dry
The early autumn sun still climbing high
Here at millennium here at millennium
Here at millennium here at millennium
And high above these woods and hills
The sky with parting birds it fills
As cooler breezes start to blow
All crops are in, and bonfires glow
Here at millennium here at millennium
Though every footstep still reminds
Of better seasons, kinder times
We stand together still as pines
Soft of voice and strong of mind
And we who’re left we watch and learn
A little more each season’s turn
The richest memories we retain
Here we will come and here remain
Here at millennium here at millennium

You can lean on me
03:34
|
|||
Take your coat off and sit on down beside me
You don’t have to be alone
You don’t have to be you don’t have to think or act
In any way that’s not your own
And I can see it in the shadow of your eyes
You’ve been up all night out in the rain
And through the window I can see the early dawn
Brings the restless day again
And I would give so much to take it all away from you
But I know that can’t be true
But I can hold on to the fragments of your soul
And you can lean on me
In this room with me you’re safe – you can be certain
All your wounds can start to heal
I can hear you I can hold, I can comfort you
And all that emptiness you feel
I would give so much to take it all away from you
But I know that can’t be true
But I can hold on to the fragments of your soul
And you can lean on me
